Waterfall of Words

The merging of nature and technique is a complicated matter and most approaches already fail at the beginning. Usually, technology serves the purpose to help humans to transform nature into culture. So much the better, if it succeeds to combine both in pure harmony. This is the exciting idea of the German artist, Julius Popp (née 1973).

In his installation Bit.Fall (2002-2006) water is the medium between information and the viewer. Two circular flows are combined: on the one hand, the one of nature with the force of gravity. On the other hand, the one of information with its fleeting moment. A software based on a static algorithm filters news from the internet. These news are broken down to keywords and these data is send to the mechanical control of the installation. Water is gravitated to pumps and for fractions of a second hundred and thousands of drops – fluidised as pixels and bits – fall to the ground and create a waterfall of words. The idea of the artist is to display the speed and momentariness of information in modern society. This succeeds in a impressive way and because of this, the installation becomes an effective and beautiful piece of art.

What are we left with once the World Cup is over? First, a big black nothing, as the German and Uruguayan fans have experienced it since the middle of last week. Although at that point, the tournament wasn’t yet over for the two teams, who could vie for third place in the so-called “little finals” and leave the World Cup on a positive note, the inebriating excitement of the last few weeks was initially followed by a sobering hangover.

WC 2010: The mother of all games

As in the past, when it comes to matches between these football-crazed nations, the mood in the air gets more and more war-like with each approaching day. Especially many military metaphors are found the tabloid press, which treats soccer as if it were the next chapter of a battle utilizing means other than weapons. Sports fans in these peaceful times of European coexistence can discount this as remains of folklore tradition or choose to get a last kick of adrenaline out of it.
