Creating your own logo for a project is more important than you may think. The idea is to present your company or event in a compact way. Everyone knows the golden arches of the McDonald’s sign or the three stripes that indicate the Adidas label. Even our MAGIX oval has marked our products now for over 16 years. A logo significantly improves the communication among not only industry giants, but also small businesses, bands or individual events…
An own logo improves the loyalty between the company / project and the customer. It also creates a brand identity and gives the company a professional character. When creating your own logo, it is important to be aware of choosing the right design and idea. The following 9 tips will hopefully help you create your own perfect logo.

Choosing the right logo!

There are three types of logos. Text-based logos, such as IBM, Cyberport or Sony, are exclusively typographically designed. Furthermore, there are logos that represent the company’s activity. A cleaning company, for example could use a broom to illustrate its services. The third and last type are logos which use abstract forms, such as Nike’s “Swoosh”.
At first, a so-called symbol may be meaningless and only the intended relevant communication can express its function. However, this may be very expensive and time consuming, especially for startups or growing companies which lack financial prosperity. For such projects, representational logos may seem appropriate. By just simply looking at your logo, the potential customer should gain an insight into the activity of your project or company.

9 tips on how to create your own logo:

Please note: Before you start a draft of your logo, you need to be sure of the message you want to send out to your customers. By doing so, we advise you to list all desired elements the logo should express. (Keep in mind that a logo is a long-term investment)
The following tips will help you to “create your own logo”.

1. Maintain an overview: Take a look at your competitors. Do they prefer massive and clear forms, conservative graphics or rather stylistic illustrations and fonts? You need to consider how your logo will improve the project by distinguishing it from others.

2. Focus on the key message: Decide what the message is you would like to communicate with regard to the project. Should it communicate personal, serious or happy feelings? What makes it so special compared to other competitors? It is advisable to focus on your target group and their characters. These points should form the core idea of designing your logo.

3. Keep it simple and functional: Do not use too many subtleties that may overshadow your logo. Either on a business card or on a football shirt, its effect should stay the same. To create your own successful logo we recommend to use a graphic software, which will ensure the scalability and easy reproducibility of your logo.
Do not forget that faxes are still sent out even nowadays. You need to make sure your logo also works in black and white.

4. The name affects the logo: The company “P.K. Jeweler” would choose a fine serif font for their logo, whereas the name “lightning printing” would imply graphics, e.g. – who would have thought – a lightning bolt.

5. Illustrate the main interests of your company: Use images and graphics rather than written words to give a direct impression. The “lightning printing” logo implies fast printing service. Here, a lighting bolt would convey the meaning of speed and accuracy.

6. Avoid Clip Arts: It may be tempting, but stay away from Clip Arts. They look “cheap” and can easily be copied and your logo would loose its uniqueness.

7. Don’t just follow the trend: If you want to redesign an old logo, do not try and simply integrate a new trend. You may irritate your customers by changing the old style. The guideline for a well designed logo is to make sure you are able to stick to your logo for ten to twenty years. If you need to adapt your logo to a more modern style, try and keep it simple without changing its original message.

8. Be careful when choosing the color: Many companies do not take into account the causes of further expenses when choosing the right color. Five colors on a logo may look nicer than just three, but the printing costs are higher. On top of that, some media only allow one to two colors for printing. Therefore, try not to exceed the amount of three colors, if possible.

9. Should I employ a graphic designer or create my own logo? A skilled graphic designer helps you design your logo in next to no time, but it’s expensive. With professional graphics software and some exercise you can design your own logo – without any additional costs.
