10 essential tips for creating a hit

How can you produce a pop hit? Well, there are lots of ways. The first 5 tips in my article describe the characteristics that, in my opinion, a producer needs to brings to the table. In my last 5 tips, I go into characteristics recommended for producing a music track and I’ll talk about techniques for making a song stand out in modern music.

1. Experiment – a lot.

When you analyze music by other people, think about your first reaction to it. If you listen to a really exciting new sound concept, the first question you ask yourself is how these sounds have been brought to the next level, and what arrangements have been used. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a futuristic sound or a kind of music that has never existed before. Pop songs maintain their freshness and originality by combining different styles, and genre-spanning experiments create interesting sounds that can be used to unite old and new sounds in the perfect pop song.

2. Keep on the lookout for trends

One of the most important things when you’re producing pop music is to stay active Pop music comprises just a part of pop culture. To be successful, you need to develop a vibe that the majority of people want to listen to. To recognize a trend early, you need to keep your finger on the pulse. Trends are often influenced by the media and changes to lifestyle and fashion. Keep an eye on advances in technology too, as digital productions push their analog precursors out the way more and more. Don’t ignore a new kind of software, especially if it has already been used to produce several hits.

3. Music for the masses

To make a pop song for the masses, you have to fine-tune things to spark the interest of the general public. The entire production should be kept neutral to interest as many people as possible – although it’s highly advisable to go in a specific direction for certain elements. You want to create a song that will generate as many listeners as possible. The aim is not to make the song concept too special, but not to bore the listener on the other hand – it should captivate people, but also allow any amateur pianist to replicate the main melody with just a little practice.

4. Being moody is okay

You own mood has a huge influence on the style and form of your production. Just like in any other line of work, on some days everything goes perfectly to plan, on others, nothing works out. You can’t get discouraged if you only managed to arrange a small element of the song in one day, rather than the entire track. However, it’s still a good idea to record even the smallest sketch of an idea or composition in order to turn it into a unique song at another time in a different mood.
audio softwarefrom MAGIX is ideal for keeping track of storing your song sketches.

5. Trust your gut instincts

No matter how much advice and tips you receive, an innovative, original idea needs space to develop. When you’re trying to create the perfect pop song, you’ll hear a whole pile of tips that may seem strange. Sometimes it’s best to ignore these tips and go with your gut feeling. Just do your own thing, because at the end of the day, you want a production that you are satisfied with.

6. Keep your ears open

A hit record blends different genres together, which can make it interesting and unique. In order to be able to evaluate as many productions as possible, it is important to have or develop a broadly diversified musical taste. Taking a closer look at the history of music doesn’t hurt, because this is how developments in modern music can be recognized. If you let yourself drift in different directions, a special feeling for the arrangements that make up the sound of a piece will soon develop. This will help broaden your horizons and enable you to come up with new ideas that can then be better integrated into your production.

7. Less is more

A hit must sound full so that it’ll stand out clearly from the mass of other productions. Try to use as few sound elements as possible when creating this sound image. This may seem strange at first, but with fewer elements you can mix every single sound especially loud – although this fills the maximum of the possible frequency range, it lets you achieve a clear and yet full sound experience. This method is useful because it leaves room for adding vocals at the end.

8. Use true talent

For high-quality vocals, there’s no need to use the world’s most extraordinary voice or invite a famous opera singer to the recording booth. Producers today are always looking for ways to change recordings. Have a listen to the current charts. How many artists there actually have “normal” voices in their tracks? In order to arouse the listeners’ interest, experiment with voice recordings as much as possible. Regardless of whatever editing options you have at hand, a decent vocals recordingis hugely important for a good recording.

9. Freedom while songwriting

Unfortunately, there’s no formula for the perfect song lyrics. When a track just has a beat or riff at the start, you have a rough framework to work with. It can also happen that sudden inspiration will lead you in a completely different direction. One thing is for sure: creativity needs free space and should not be restricted by any given sound structure. It’s also important not to make the text too complicated, as this may hinder you constructing a song that’s catchy. It’s when the words “gel” together with a melody that stays in your head that you have the perfect song lyrics.

10. It’s the mix that makes the track

As well as the right sound distribution, a good song also needs a perfect mix in order to sound great on all playback devices. Whether it’s going to played in the car, the kitchen radio, on headphones or in the club, the result should be perfect. Each use scenario has its own priorities: headphones require flawless stereo, while in clubs, the song needs low frequency ranges that move further down. A good mix has a decisive effect on the finished result, so you should attempt to get things right in all areas if you can. This is easily done using the software mixer in MAGIX Music Maker.

The tips we’ve listed here will help you improve your productions or change your approach to them. The most essential things are motivation, self-criticism and hard work – since success won’t come overnight. Once we see positive results, there’s no time to lose and you can get on with your next project right away. It’s the only way to hold your ground with your music productions.
