Digital highlights of 2016, and what to look forward to in 2017

Each year we’ve come to joyously await the new digital highlights, like the new Apple iPhone, a more stellar version of a Samsung smartphone or a new offshoot of EA’s FIFA Series.
This year there’ve been quite a few particularly exciting news and surprises. We look back at what has turned out to be an especially exciting digital year and try to unlock what awaits us in the next 12 months!

Digital highlights: 2016 in review – now that was fun!

1) Virtual reality

Virtual reality has long stopped being a far-away dream. The victory march of VR glasses started in 2016, when Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Samsung’s Gear VR made it possible for us to dive into new virtual worlds. Considering that the technology is still in its infancy, the milestones reached in this short times are very impressive.

2) Drones

Panorama photos and videos have never been so beautiful. Beginning this year, end users can finally lift off with remote-controlled technologies. So-called quadrocopters help you conquer new perspectives from up above. But, of course, this is far from all: drones are capable of much more. Did you know that Amazon has been testing drone technology for deliveries? And this is just the tip of the iceberg, so needless to say we’re excited what all kinds of UFOs will accomplish in the future.
Want to know more about quadrocopters? Tilman Herberger comes to the rescue, sharing his experiences with film and video as a software developer at MAGIX during the last 5 years.

3) Pokémon Go

You couldn’t get away from the pocket-sized monsters during the summer of 2016! The news were full of announcements of crazy events precipitated by the augmented reality game. The idea behind it is as simple as it gets: Walk outside, start the app and hunt cute Pokémons. The phenomenon spread quickly throughout the world. And, yes, we admit, we’ve also covered miles and miles to get that Relaxo five blocks away. Was it worth it? Oh yeah!
By the way: This year, “Pokémon Go” was the second most popular Internet searchword, beat out only by EC 2016.

4) The VEGAS acquisition

The acquisition of a large portion of Sony Creative Software products was THE event of the year for MAGIX. In addition to many acclaimed product lines like VEGAS Pro and Movie Studio, MAGIX has also taken over several product-specific forums with an active customer base of several million users. So, if you’re looking for a supportive and helpful Community, you should check out:

5) Streaming on the rise

2016 has been the year of successful streaming platforms. A big advantage of streaming is the reduction in media piracy. The exact reasons for this may be complex and debatable, but it all comes down to this: It is just easier to listen to music on Spotify or watch series on Netflix than rummaging on the web for files.
Amazon Prime deserves a special mention, whose more than 60 million paying customers make it the world’s number one subscription program. Besides Prime Video, you can also get premium access to, the most successful live streaming video portal.

2017 forecast – exciting outlook in tech

1) Movies, games and series

The lineup for the coming year is simply unbelievable! Here’s a first taste of what awaits us (spoiler: there are many sequels):

Movies: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2; Justice League; Spider Man: Homecoming; Logan; Thor 3: Ragnarok; Star Wars Episode VIII; Pirates of the Caribbean 5; Fast & Furious 8; Despicable Me 3; Beauty and the Beast

Games: Halo Wars 4; Star Wars Battlefront 2; Tekken 7; Metal Gear Survive; Red Dead Redemption 2; The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, God of War (IV)

Series: American Gods; Inhuman; Sherlock (season 4); Prison Break: Sequel; Star Trek Discovery; Goliath; Game of Thrones (season 7); The Walking Dead (season 7)

2) VEGAS Movie Studio

Following VEGAS Pro 14, it’s time for the new Movie Studio version! We’re already hard at work on the new software to present you with a great product in early 2017. Until then, you can find all VEGAS news as usual on the VCS Facebook page.

3) Nintendo Switch

Nintendo’s new game console can be used as usual with a TV, but thanks to its removable control elements, it can also act as a handheld unit. The Japanese gaming group is still holding back more details about this release. Additional information about Nintendo Switch (price, specs, release date, etc.) should be available on January 13th as part of the official presentation.
Until then, you can be envious of Jimmy Fallon, who already got to play with Switch on the Tonight Show.

4) Smart home

Smart home – sounds like an abstract system from a far-away future. In the future it will be possible to operate a vacuum cleaning robot and other household devices using your smartphone and your wearables, resulting in superior coordination. At the heart of the idea is improving quality of life using remotely controlled devices and automated processes, so that house chores are reduced to a minimum. The missing element to fulfil this dream is a uniform connection technology.
That this approach can work well is seen with Philips LED lighting system Hue.

5) Amazon Go

Imagine entering a supermarket, selecting products and then simply leaving – no check-out lines, no payment hassle. Payment is made automatically via your Amazon customer account. The first test branch of the online retailer is set to open in 2017 in Seattle. It remains to be seen how successful Supermarket 2.0 will be. We’re already excited to see the results of the experiment!
